Is Dexcom covered by Medicare and if so what is the cost of Dexcom G6 for Medicare patients?
If Medicare covers Dexcom G6 patients will still have to pay 20% of the cost of Dexcom G6. Medicare patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes on 3 or more insulin injections a day may be able to obtain coverage if they fit the following Medicare coverage criteria:
- The patient must have diabetes;
- The diabetic patient has been using a glucose meter at home and was performing frequent (four or more times a day). The patient is insulin-treated with three or more daily injections (MDI) of insulin or on an insulin pump. The person with diabetes needs insulin treatment regimen which requires frequent adjustments based on therapeutic Dexcom G6 testing results;
- Within six months prior to ordering the CGM, a diabetic patient must have had an in-person visit with the endocrinologist or diabetes doctor to determine that the above criteria have been met;
- At least every six months following the initial prescription of the CGM, the patient with diabetes must have an in-person/virtual visit with the treating practitioner to assess adherence to their CGM regimen and diabetes treatment plan.
- Medicare covers your G6 supplies, only if you have a receiver that is compatible with Dexcom G6. You must use that Dexcom receiver with your supplies. Even if you also use a compatible smart device you still have to use the receiver for Medicare coverage.

This is more than likely because half of the Medicare for ablation does not really use a smart cell phone. A lot of times using a receiver makes their life a lot easier. Yet it definitely increases the cost of Dexcom G6.

Why Dexcom is so expensive?
Unfortunately, technology involved in producing sensors and transmitters is very expensive. Production volume is low and labor cost is high. If Dexcom G6 can find a way to scale the production by reducing the cost the Dexcom G6 prices will go down. If Dexcom G6 was available to have a diabetic definitely cost would be lower. Dexcom is planning to go into partnership would go to escalate the production line. I believe the prices of Dexcom will be much lower in the future.
